SCI Rehab (Improving SCI Rehabilitation Outcomes)

Goal: To examine SCI rehabilitation outcomes and best practices across 6 rehabilitation centers in the U.S.

Design: Prospective, observational cohort study using a practice-based evidence methodology.

Setting: Led by the Rocky Mountain Regional Spinal Injury System at Craig Hospital in Colorado, this project is a collaborative research partnership with five other prominent SCI rehabilitation facilities, including Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Shepherd Center, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, National Rehabilitation Hospital, and Carolinas Rehabilitation.

Methods: 1,500 SCI patients receiving acute care will be recruited to the study over a 5-year interval. The PBE methodology analyzes the content and timing of individual steps of the entire care process in each discipline, including Medicine, Nursing, PT/OT, Speech Language Pathology, Psychology, Recreational Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, and Case Management/Social Work, etc.; and how each is associated with outcomes.
