SCI SKIN (SCI Study for Keeping Integument 'Ntact)

Goal: To create practice-based evidence (PBE) for strategies and interventions that can prevent the onset of pressure ulcers among Spinal Cord Injury/Disease patients in acute acre and rehabilitation.

Design: Prospective, observational cohort study using a practice-based evidence methodology.

Setting: Washington Hospital Center (Acute care; N=450) and National Rehabilitation Hospital (Rehabilitation; N=450).

Methods: 900 patients with Spinal Cord Injury/Disease from acute and rehabilitation care are being recruited to this study over a 5-year interval. A PBE approach analyzes the content and timing of individual steps of the entire care process. Namely, it allows us to study each component (Physical/Occupational Therapy, Nursing approaches, Nutrition, Medicine, etc) in the intervention process and how, and to what degree, each is associated with outcomes through a point-of-care documentation system that documents specific activities and interventions provided by each discipline on a daily basis.
