Black-white Disparities in Stroke Rehabilitation

Goal: To examine differences in stroke rehabilitation processes and outcomes among black and white stroke survivors and to determine how rehabilitation treatment can be optimized for both groups taking into account their respective rehabilitation needs.

Design: Prospective observational cohort study.

Setting: Six IRF centers.

Methods: The proposed study capitalizes on a unique comprehensive stroke rehabilitation database (N = 1161) containing detailed patient, intervention, and outcomes data assembled from Post-Stroke Rehabilitation Outcomes Project (2001-2003). This database contains extraordinarily detailed data on rehabilitation care processes and treatments that allow investigators to peer into the "black box" of stroke rehabilitation care and to dissect the processes of care that might be different for whites and blacks. Logistic modeling is used to study differences in outcome and processes of care between both groups.
